Travelling to Hong Kong – Restriction Updates Jan 2021

The Immigration Department of HKSAR – Services Updates


  1. From 10th December 2020, the Department only provides visa services for urgent applications of extensions of stay. Applicants must submit their applications by drop-in (including those with appointment bookings). And applicants must provide a local mobile phone number as contact number for the Immigration Department to arrange follow-up procedures. Any queries, you may contact the Immigration Department on 3521 1840 during their working hours (Mon – Fri 9am to 5pm). Some applicants may be eligible for online applications submission for extension of stay. For details, www.immd.gov.hk/eng/online-services/index.html

  2. Applications for Visa Extension (except Foreign Domestic Helpers and Imported Workers). On the 31st December 2020, he Immigration Department announced that, they will accept applications from applicants who are unable to return to Hong Kong to apply for their visa extension due to the COVID-19 pandemic, those who fit one of the below requirements: * your limit of stay is about to expire (within 4 weeks); or * your visa has expired for less than 12 months. Eligible applicants will require to submit: * their completed application forms; * all the required supporting documents relevant to their immigration policy or scheme; * a letter setting out the details on their inability to return to Hong Kong timely for the extension of stay formalities. If the Immigration Department is satisfied that the applicants' circumstances are a continuation of their previous residence in Hong Kong, the Department may consider issuing a visa or entry permit to the applicants to return to Hong Kong within the granted period of the new visa/ entry permit.



Additional Quarantine Requirements


Effective 21st December 2020, any inbound travelers arriving into Hong Kong, who have visited any destination outside of Mainland China are required to provide a room confirmation at one of the designated hotels for your 21-day mandatory quarantine. Home quarantine is no longer permitted.


Effective 25th December 2020, mandatory quarantine has been extended to 21 days.



Travelling from the Airport to Your Quarantine Hotel


You must take designated transportation to your hotel (from the airport), which will be arranged by the Government.



High Risk Countries - Updated List


Anyone who has visited/ transited at one or more of the below high-risk countries in the past 21 days prior to arriving into Hong Kong, must present a negative COVID-19 test result at the Hong Kong International Airport at arrival:

  • Bangladesh

  • Belgium

  • Canada

  • Ecuador

  • Ethiopia

  • France

  • Germany

  • India

  • Indonesia

  • Kazakhstan

  • Nepal

  • Pakistan

  • the Philippines

  • Romania

  • Russia

  • South Africa

  • Turkey

  • the United Kingdom

  • the United States

  • Ukraine
